Achieving Five Star Rating - Natalie from Sorrento

Question

I am building a new house and I have heard about 5 Star Ratings, but am not really sure what it is required. Can you please explain the "Basics" as I would like my house to be as energy efficient as possible.

Answer

The Five Star Energy rating Standard for residential homes ensures that new homes in Victoria are built to incorporate certain environmental features, as a result of this the new homes will be of a better Sustainability 3quality, more comfortable, more affordable and environmentally sound.

There are many building products & techniques that will help you achieve a 5 Star rating, and any of the following will contribute towards this; House Orientation, Internal Design, Building Materials, Shading of Windows, Insulation, Glazing Choice as well as water saving fixtures. Solar Energy & Solar Hot water and rain water tanks should also be taken into account when embarking on your new home design.

For a great start come into HIDC to see the latest in energy efficiency and smart building techniques and there is a great new website from the Building Commission called "Make Your Home Green" which is well worth a look.

The Exhibitors below all have products and practice building methods to help meet the requirements of 5 Star Design and would be a great source of information for your research.
